ARTIST STATEMENT:
“Through my artistic practice I examine ways in which people relate to and communicate with each other, and the conflicts that could be mitigated if not for our assumptions and misunderstandings. Negotiations was shot years ago, before my husband and I considered having children, but it was never finished. We got the idea of adding the voiceover when we were invited to make a new collaboration for a 2016 exhibition about couples. Superimposed shots of our hands creating blind contour drawings of each other are accompanied by our voices reciting negotiations frequently made now that we are parents. In alternating voices each of us recites the same words, skewing engendered expectations and highlighting the equity in our roles, while reflecting on the shifts in our relationship and the complexity of bringing a third person into it.”
