ARTIST STATEMENT:
“This work is an exploration of the concept of ‘childhood memories’ and, in particular, how their dependency on visual records such as home movies makes them constructed and selective. Juggling my creative needs as an artist and not wanting to be away from my young son, it seemed natural to make a film that included him. Using a small digital toy camera created a “poor” image quality, rough like the Super 8mm footage of my father’s home movies of my own childhood home movies, which immediately evokes nostalgia. The camera also creates small video frames, and thus inspired the building block style. This building of the image frame also then serves to draw attention to the constructed nature of these home movie images.”
