ARTIST STATEMENT:
“I use myself and my children in my work to examine the complex and contradictory nature of motherhood and to experiment with the at once terrifying and beautiful loss of the ability to see the line between oneself and another. ‘My Puppet’ is a video I made when my second daughter was a new-born. While feeling incredibly devoted and connected to her, the raw intensity and difficulty of labour and the postpartum period made me reflect on the idea of feeling emotions that aren’t so cut and dry, like resentment. ‘Her Puppet’ is a video piece I created with my four year old daughter. It investigates the healthy everyday intimacy between a mother and child that results in a casual objectification of the mother’s body.”
