ARTIST STATEMENT:
“In early parenthood, my husband travelled a lot. Late one night, I was downstairs doing the dishes. The old house was quiet. I looked up at the baby monitor, taking in its comforting hum, and wondered to myself: what if I heard some inexplicable, supernatural sound come out of it? What would I do? As a new mother, I experienced the crazy-making sleep deprivation and isolation that often comes with the territory. That night reminded me of changeling stories which occur in the folklore of many cultures. I started thinking about why a mother’s intuition would tell her the child before her was not her own and how we would interpret a changeling story in the modern age, with our new understanding of postpartum depression and psychosis.”
